5 Signs It's Time to Replace Your Furnace
A well-maintained furnace can keep an Iowa home comfortable for 15 to 20 years, but no heating system lasts forever. Recognizing the signals that your furnace is reaching the end of its life can save you from a January emergency — and often from months of inflated energy bills.
1. Your energy bills keep climbing
As a furnace ages, internal components wear down and the system has to work harder to maintain the same comfort. If your gas or electric bill has crept up year over year without any change in thermostat habits, your furnace's efficiency may have dropped well below its original rating. Modern high-efficiency systems — including our All Pro Freedom line — run at 95% AFUE or higher, turning nearly every dollar of fuel into heat instead of waste.
2. Some rooms never feel right
Uneven heating is one of the most common complaints we hear in older Des Moines homes. If bedrooms upstairs run cold while the main floor feels stuffy, or if one zone always lags behind the thermostat reading, the furnace may no longer be strong enough to move conditioned air through your duct system. Before replacing, we always check for duct leaks and airflow restrictions — but an undersized or failing blower is often the real culprit.
3. The system runs constantly or short-cycles
A furnace that kicks on and off every few minutes — or one that practically never stops — is struggling to meet demand. Short cycling is often caused by a cracked heat exchanger, a failing flame sensor, or an oversized unit installed years ago. Constant running usually points to lost capacity or severe duct loss. Either pattern wears the system out faster and wastes energy in the process.
4. You're hearing noises you didn't hear before
Banging, popping, rattling, and whistling are rarely cosmetic. They typically signal loose or broken internal parts, delayed ignition, or duct issues. A rumble at ignition can be especially dangerous — it may indicate a gas valve or heat exchanger problem that needs professional attention immediately.
5. The furnace is 15+ years old and needs frequent repairs
The rule of thumb we share with customers: if the cost of a repair exceeds half the cost of replacement, and the unit is past 15 years old, replacement is almost always the better investment. Newer systems are quieter, safer, and dramatically more efficient, and they often qualify for rebates and financing that offset the upfront cost.
